Emotional Regulation

Play develops a child’s capacity to regulate their emotional state and reactions. Developing your child’s emotional regulation will positively impact their relationships, mental health, and academic performance.  Free play is particularly beneficial for this as it enables a child to create their scenarios and test their responses in a safe environment.  Studies show that these factors help foster a growth mindset and improve their ability to self-regulate.

Instilling Independence During Play

Instilling independence during play is fundamental in preparing a child for their school journey, as well as equipping them with the necessary tools to become self-reliant later in life. Research shows that promoting independence during play from an early age increases problem-solving capacities, builds persistence, and teaches focus and resilience.

Imaginative Play

Imaginative play includes role play, playing with toys and creative play.  It provides your child with an opportunity to express themselves and create situations and games that they are interested in.  This enhances your child’s self-esteem and confidence and develops feelings of autonomy. Imaginative play provides caregivers an opportunity to connect with your child and explore their world and interests.

Outdoor play, Utilising Natural Resources

Encouraging a child to play outdoors whilst utilising natural resources increases their compassion and respect for the world around them. A child who is immersed in nature learns the importance of caring for the environment and how to be sustainable; in turn, this forms a lifelong outlook which is firmly rooted into their experiences of play in their youth.

Supporting Developmental milestones

Developmental milestones are things that most children can do by a certain age. Connecting with a child through play is pivotal in supporting the various changes that children continuously undergo and assists them in the acquisition of new skills.

Movement

Movement helps to develop fine and gross motor skills. In addition to strengthening muscles and bones, it improves bilateral coordination skills. Play through movement increases a child's confidence and promotes healthy risk-taking, allowing them to discover their body’s amazing potential!

“My nanny is so much more patient and understanding when my son has anger outbursts. I used to feel uncomfortable about how she responded to him and have asked her to be more caring towards him when he is upset. I have really noticed a difference in how she deals with him now and how she can diffuse a situation by suggesting they play something together when he is upset”

Lucy, mum of a 5-year-old boy.
